More about Hip Replacement
About the procedure
Hip replacement is a surgical procedure to relieve arthritis pain or to treat hip injuries.
The surgery involves replacing the painful hip joint with an artificial joint made with metal
or plastic to help you with the pain that can't be controlled by medications and improves
its function. The surgery takes 1-1.5 hours.
The surgery is generally performed by making a 8-10 inch cut along the side of the hip
but recently doctors have been using minimally invasive technique that includes making
two 2-5 inch long cuts.
Why the procedure?
Hip replacement surgery may be required-
●if you have a hip fracture.
●If you have severe pain in your hip that is not relieved by medications
●If it is difficult for you to perform daily tasks like walking, sitting.
●Incase of Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis.
●If you have any hip stiffness that prevents you to move comfortably.
Types of procedure
The 3 major types are-
1.Total hip replacement- The most common type of hip replacement where the
diseased ball and socket is replaced with an implant.
2.Partial hip replacement- When only a ball part of the hip is replaced not the
socket. This type of surgery is performed to treat certain types of hip fractures.
3.Hip resurfacing- In hip resurfacing, the femoral head (highest part of the bone)
is not removed. But instead capped with a metal covering. It is considered as a
more conservative procedure.
4.Revision Joint replacement surgery- As the name suggests, revision surgery
involves replacing the original joint replaced with new component. It can be
performed to manage complication like infection from a hip replacement.
Before the procedure
Have a discussion with your doctor, learn about the procedure like what to expect during
and after the surgery. There are a few questions that you can ask before going for the
same.
●What type of hip replacement surgery is best for you.
●The type of implant that will be used.
●The things that you can do before the surgery like diet, exercise.
●Discuss the risks of the surgery with your doctor or the possible outcomes.
●If the insurance covers all the cost of just some.
●The recovery time, medications and the hospital stay.
●Incase you smoke, quit smoking as nicotine can slow recovery and cause
complications.
After the procedure
The recovery period after the surgery is very important so there are a few things that
you can do to insure your safety and comfort. Here are some things that can help you
after the procedure is done-
●Follow your physical therapist instructions. Physical therapy helps the patient to
recover faster and have better outcomes.
●Take care of the wound. With the help of your doctor, understand how and when
to change your bandage to avoid postoperative infection.
●Use of walker/crane or other medical equipments that helps recovery.
●Healthy diet and regular exercise (for at least 20-25 mins in a day.
●Prepare or make adjustments in your home (like a raised toilet seat and shower
chair) ahead of time for your arrival after the surgery to ensure comfort and easy
recovery.
●Avoid heavy lifting and ask you doctor about safe sleeping positions.
